All Hail The Glorious KLINGON Revolution! [Oct. 26th, 2009|12:21 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]
[mood | amused]

Somebody made an animated Klingon Propaganda film, entirely in Klingon, and based on old USSR and Communist Chinese propaganda:

At the end, the film gives the name of a website in Klingon, which translates as www.tlhingan.org.  If you go there, you'll see the film, an essay by a Klingon-recruited Terran who extolls the benefits of joining the glorious Klingon Empire, some desktop wallpaper downloads, and a place to join the Klingon Empire (or at least, their e-mail list).

Awesome stuff, but having looked around the web, it seems that nobody knows who did this!  The website is registered under a Klingon name, although a Bay-area production company owns the address... they've done previous Trek viral videos with a pro-immigration stance.  No one seems to be sure if this is a fan film (if so, it's VERY well done), or some sort of viral marketing campaign.

Some things it could be:

- A fan film... a really, really good one.
- Viral marketing for the next Trek movie.
- Viral marketing for Star Trek Online.
- Viral marketing for a new animated series.
- None of the above.

So, what do YOU think of it?  And if anyone can provide a translation of the Klingon narration in the video [looks over in klingonguy's direction] I would appreciate it!

Q'apla!

Remember the God-awful nightclub dancing scene in Spiderman 3? The one that was almost PAINFUL to watch?

Turns out that Spidey was holding out on us!

(Facebook folk can click on the link to see the video.)

And, of course, I'm gonna have to find that version of the Spiderman theme song! 8-)

FANGIRL INVASION - The War of the Sexes Hits Geekdom

In one panel, filmmaker/comic shop owner Kevin Smith mentioned "Twilight," and his throngs of fans responded with such loud boos and jeers that Smith chastised them.

"That's the next generation of fans!" Smith said. "That's what I love about a comic book convention. People will come to a convention, stand there in a Spock costume, look at someone in a Chewie costume, and say, 'Look at that f__in' geek. How dare you pass judgment on those 12-year-old girls who like vampires!"

Great article, and Smith's quote really hits it right on the head.

Off to Pi-Con for the weekend! [Aug. 20th, 2009|10:37 am]

[mood | excited]

I'll be out of work at noon, and then heading off to Pi-Con with [info]elionwyr.  Ergo, I will be somewhat incommunicado over the weekend.  I'll have the iPhone, and will check email occasionally.  I will NOT be checking LJ or Facebook.

I expect to be returning on Monday, although that is subject to change without notice.  I will post when I make it back.

Take care, everyone, and I'll see you on the flip side!

[Tags|, , ]
[Current Location |United States, Pennsylvania, Paoli]
[mood | geeky]

I will be a panelist at Pi-Con, which is August 21-23 at the Crowne Plaza Enfield-Springfield hotel in Enfield, CT.  I got my original schedule a few weeks ago, but held off on posting it because, as I know from WAY too much experience, there would be revisions.

And I was right. :-)

Thanks to the highly competent Jennifer Williams (aka[info]octoberland) for putting this together and providing it to us poor, lowly panelists.  ;-P

Here's my schedule for the con (as it stands now).  Listing is Day, Time, Room, Topic, Panelists ("M" denotes the Moderator):

Friday, 5:00pm, Venice: Blogging 101 - Hugh Casey, Kat Toomajian, KT Pinto, Yvonne Crats-Powell(M), Dusti Lewars  [ Step one... get a blog! ]

Friday, 7:00pm, Somers: Where did all the young people go? - Robert Juliano(M), Hugh Casey, Sarah Hodge-Wetherbe, Julia Burton  [ How the hell would I know?  Hey, you kids... GET OFFA MY LAWN! ]

Friday, 8:00pm, Agawam: Free Speech & The Internet - Hugh Casey(M), Drew Van Zandt, Eric Weimer, Inanna Arthen, David Larochelle

[ Notice, I will either have to have a FAST dinner between 6 and 7, or a late dinner after 9.  Or a REALLY early dinner... like at 3:30.  Oh, Jen... you gots some 'splainin' to do!  ;-P ] [ Yes, I'm only kidding... I know how tough it is to put together these schedules! ]

Friday, 11:00pm, Venice: The Flirting Panel - Hugh Casey, Sara Harvey(M), KT Pinto, Drew Van Zandt, Chelsey Cayer  [ Step one... look around the room.  Everyone here seems to have the same idea.  Go get 'em, Tiger! ]

Saturday, 12:00pm, Venice: Does Star Trek Have a Future? - Jennifer Williams, Terri Osborne, Hugh Casey, Jeff Warner(M), Sarah Hodge-Wetherbe  [ YES!  Panel's over!  Goodnight, Cleveland! ]

Saturday, 1:00pm, Somers: Age & Treachery: The Older Fan - George Claxton(M), Hugh Casey, Vikki Rose, Jeff Warner  [ Ah, at last!  A panel that takes advantage of my unique skill set! ;-P ]

Saturday, 3:00pm, Fragmented Fandom - George Claxton(M), Hugh Casey, Micah Schneider, Kate Farb-Johnson, Dusti Lewars  [ Interesting how I'm on THREE panels regarding the scisming of fandom.  I keep telling you people... IT'S NOT MY FAULT! ]

Saturday, 7:00pm, Somers: Best Movies You Never Heard Of - Jennifer Williams(M), Hugh Casey, Jeff Mach, Genevieve Iseult Eldredge, Resa Nelson  [ I'm just gonna make up a bunch of movie titles so that I sound like I REALLY know a lot of obscure films... ]

Sunday: I'm totally FREE!  Get yer Hugh at NO CHARGE!

I will likely be coming home on Sunday afternoon/evening.

SO, who am I going to see there?

This movie looks VERY cool!

*Thumbs UP*

Here comes a new steampunk anime movie set in 1914. In 1900, invaders from Mars attacked the Earth. The Martian's 80 ft tall, heat-ray spewing, Tripod battle machines laid waste to the planet, but the invaders ultimately fell prey to Earth's tiny bacteria. Fourteen years later, Man has rebuilt his shattered world, in large part by utilising captured Martian technology. War of the Worlds: Goliath will feature heat rays, steam-powered battle Tripods, souped up biplane and triplane fighters, a 1,500-foot long, armoured battle Zeppelin and a re-imagined steampunk New York City are some of the visuals that are being brought to life in this production.

Marvel Comics Doesn't Want To Deal With Icky Girls [Jul. 8th, 2009|12:49 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[Current Location |Finishing lunch and goin' back to work!]
[mood | annoyed]

MARVEL COMICS is selling "deluxe" adult costumes based on some of their more popular characters:

Who says you have to wait until Halloween to dress up as your favorite hero? The official Marvel Shop has numerous costumes (for kids and adults), and with San Diego Comic-Con right around the corner, there's no better time to pick up some fun attire.

Yep, they've got all kinds of great outfits for comic fans who want to dress-up...

They've got CAPTAIN AMERICA,

HULK,

IRON MAN,

and even GHOST RIDER (for those fans who want to dress up like a third-string superhero with a movie that tanked...).

And, of course, for the LADIES, Mighty Marvel is offering...

Um...

Some lip gloss.

For the young ladies out there, Marvel has partnered with Lotta Luv to create some awesome lip glosses and lip balms.

Douglas Miller, Licensing Coordinator for Lotta Luv, says: "With a branded line of make-up from Marvel, girls will be able to feel as if they are going from ordinary to extraordinary just like the super hero characters in the stories... There is also such a nostalgic undertone that either young or older girls are drawn towards because of the long history and brand behind the name Marvel."

Looking at the Marvel Shop online, they ARE selling a "Sassy Spider-Girl" costume.  Check it out!

Yah.  Um, guys, I wouldn't use that to support the argument that you're offering a good number of choices for women.  OK?

Well, maybe they have a point here.  I mean, after all, it's not like you ever see grown women dressed up as their favorite characters at a con!  Right?

I can haz Balticon schedule! [May. 21st, 2009|10:22 am]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | geeky]

After several weeks of various communication snafus (mostly being that their emails weren't getting to me, and mine weren't getting to them), we seem to have everything fixed, and I now have a scheduled of panels I will be on at BALTICON:

Film 101: Saturday, 5PM, Salon D

Con Tales: Sunday, 5pm, Belmont Room

Is Fandom Maladjusted?: Monday, 12noon, Salon B

So, if you're at B-con, and you're having a hard time catching me, you'll be able to do so at any of these places, as well as at the PHILCON party (which I need to find out what night that's on, but whichever it is, which is on Friday evening.  I'll be there, at least for PART of the evening).

I'm leaving late tomorrow morning, won't be back until mid- to late-afternoon Monday, so everyone take care in the meantime, and play nice!

DC Dark, courtesy of Warner execs who have no idea what they're doing... [Aug. 26th, 2008|04:14 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | annoyed]

And, once again, Warner's doesn't get it...

Like the recent Batman sequel -- which has become the highest-grossing film of the year thus far -- Mr. Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as "The Dark Knight." Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it," he says. That goes for the company's Superman franchise as well.

"Exploring the evil side"?

So, you're gonna take Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, et. al., and make them all dark and brooding!?

That works for Batman... he's the DEFINITION of dark and brooding!

Not so much the others.  (You could do it a little for Green Arrow, and Martian Manhunter.  Maybe.)

Would someone PLEASE remind Robinov what happens when they take a brighter character and try to force "dark and brooding" on him?  You get SPIDERMAN 3!  *sigh*

The BIG Chair... [Aug. 19th, 2008|11:23 am]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | geeky]

Diamond Select Toys is going to be offering a full-sized replica of Kirk's Captain's Chair from the original Star Trek.  It will be a fully functional swivel chair, with working lights and buttons.

They're going to offer it in 2009, and the price will be somewhere between $1000 and $2000 dollars (I can't get any two sources to agree on pricing).

TrekMovie.com ran a photo of it...

The BIG Chair

I'm gonna have to start saving my pennies, I think.  *grin*

OK, so let's play the casting game.  We'll start with just the three main characters.

So, who should play Rand al’Thor, Matrim Cauthon and Perrin Aybara?

New Trek Photos! [Aug. 11th, 2008|10:54 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[mood | White and Nerdy]

On the heels of the four cast photos that Paramount released at ComicCon, they released four more, showing the remaining cast, at the Vegas Star Trek con this past weekend.

Don't really like the look of the guy playing Chekov, but I like the others.  Simon Pegg, especially, looks good as Scotty... I didn't even recognize him at first!  And Karl Urban as McCoy looks appropriately cranky.

Also, TrekMovie.com took the original four posters and, based on some leaks about the look of the costumes, colorized the original four case photos.  Nice stuff.

Yes, I know, I'm a geeky trekkie... but it was my first fandom.  You never forget your first.  ;-)

FLASH! AH-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! [Aug. 8th, 2008|07:11 am]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | geeky]

Sony is putting together a new FLASH GORDON film.

And it's not a re-imagining, like that the craptacular black hole of SUCK that the SciFi Channel recently tried to foist off on the viewing public.

"Flash Gordon" centers on the titular young polo player who is kidnapped and taken to the distant planet Mongo, where he and companions Dale Arden and Hans Zarkov embark on a series of adventures fighting a ruler named Ming the Merciless.

Well, here's hoping that Sony does it RIGHT this time!  SPACESHIPS WITH SPARKS!  A MIING WHO LOOKS LIKE A CROSS BETWEEN ANTON LEVAY AND FU MANCHU!  SILLY COSTUMES!  HAIRY-CHESTED HAWKMEN!  PRINCE BARIN'S HOMOSEXUAL OVERTONES!  PERVERTED GIANT MONSTERS!  NAKED DALE ARDEN!  THE PENISAURUS!

...

Oh, wait... that was FLESH GORDON!

*Emily Litella voice*  Never Mind.

PI-CON Schedule [Aug. 6th, 2008|08:47 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | excited]

Here's my schedule for Pi-Con, where I'll be from 8/22-8/24 in Western Massechusetts:

6PM Friday - "Blogging 101 -
Hugh Casey, Cory Doctorow, Shira Lipkin, KT Pinto(M), Kat Toomijian"
(OK, so I'm on a blogging panel with CORY FREAKIN' DOCTOROW, [info]shadesong, [info]ktpinto, and [info]zarhooie. What the hell am *I* going to talk about!?)

11pm Friday - "The Flirting Panel -
Hugh Casey, KT Pinto, Sara Harvey(M), Dr. James Prego"
(This panel is really my excuse to flirt with KT and Sara. Just so's ya know.) ;-)

11AM Saturday - "Comic Book To Film -
Jennifer Williams, Hugh Casey, Melissa Gavazzi, Keith RA DeCandido, Gene Kannenberg Jr.(M)"
(And it's ANOTHER panel where everyone else knows more than me. I'll just sit there and look pretty...)

Noon Saturday - "Does Star Trek have a future? -
Hugh Casey, Keith RA DeCandido, Terri Osborne, Jeff Warner, Jennifer Williams(M)"
(I'm on a TREK panel with Keith and Terri, two fantastice TREK writers. And I was on a TREK panel with Jeff at Arisia, and he's got me beat. Again, what the hell will *I* be talking about!? *sigh*)

10am Sunday - "Comics Beyond Superheroes
Hugh Casey, Melissa Gavazzi(M), Mike Luoma, Shira Lipkin, Jennifer Williams"
(OK, so Jennifer (who is not only the "Guest Of Awesome", but is also in charge of programming) put me on three panels alongside her. Hmm... it's probably because she's hot for my bod.) (Look, you have YOUR fantasies, and I have MINE, OKAY!?) ;-P

And, of course, I'll be doing plenty of hanging out with friends!

If you're up around there, or even if you're not, you should come.

Geeky News [Jul. 30th, 2008|02:07 pm]

Some geeky stuff from around the web...

Learn how to make your own Dr. Horrible costume!

If only it told you how to make a working freeze ray...

**********
Johnny Depp will play the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's version of ALICE IN WONDERLAND for Disney.

Why can't I help but think that this will probably be a very dark and strange version of Carroll's tale?

**********
And in the "Oh My God, this is going to SUCK!" department...

WB to develop a 'Marvin the Martian' feature film

According to the article, the movie will blend live action and CGI.

(Producer Steve) Crystal... developed the pitch as a Christmas story, with Marvin coming to Earth to destroy Christmas but being prevented from doing so when he’s trapped in a gift box.

Umm... wha?  I mean, really... wha?

Oh, well... that's all for now.
