According to a brief filed in a court case in Arizona, the RIAA is now of the opinion that ripping your CDs to MP3 format is "unauthorized" and is therefore illegal. This despite the fact that they actually argued the OPPOSITE before the Supreme Court in their case against Grokster.
Remember, these are the same people who have admitted that they can't understand the technology that they are supposed to be "protecting" the fat rich guys who wouldn't know good music if it bit them "recording industry" from. As Doug Morris, Chairman of UMG, admitted in this article in WIRED.

So what they're basically saying is even though I paid money for it, it's still not mine. That's like saying that even though I bought this cake recipe, I can't write it down anywhere else or give it to anyone.
