I made gunpowder once, using the recipe from the show-- saltpeter, sulfur, and some crushed charcoal briquettes. Didn't know the proportions, however.

It burned, but very fitfully, since it was loose dust. Maybe if it was tightly packed, or formulated for a serious immediate BANG...

Thing is, I always expected that bamboo tube to blow up in kirk's armpit.
