| Marvel Comics Doesn't Want To Deal With Icky Girls |

MARVEL COMICS is selling "deluxe" adult costumes based on some of their more popular characters:
Who says you have to wait until Halloween to dress up as your favorite hero? The official Marvel Shop has numerous costumes (for kids and adults), and with San Diego Comic-Con right around the corner, there's no better time to pick up some fun attire.
Yep, they've got all kinds of great outfits for comic fans who want to dress-up...
They've got CAPTAIN AMERICA,
HULK,
IRON MAN,
and even GHOST RIDER (for those fans who want to dress up like a third-string superhero with a movie that tanked...).
And, of course, for the LADIES, Mighty Marvel is offering...
Um... Some lip gloss.
For the young ladies out there, Marvel has partnered with Lotta Luv to create some awesome lip glosses and lip balms.
Douglas Miller, Licensing Coordinator for Lotta Luv, says: "With a branded line of make-up from Marvel, girls will be able to feel as if they are going from ordinary to extraordinary just like the super hero characters in the stories... There is also such a nostalgic undertone that either young or older girls are drawn towards because of the long history and brand behind the name Marvel."
Looking at the Marvel Shop online, they ARE selling a "Sassy Spider-Girl" costume. Check it out!
Yah. Um, guys, I wouldn't use that to support the argument that you're offering a good number of choices for women. OK?
Well, maybe they have a point here. I mean, after all, it's not like you ever see grown women dressed up as their favorite characters at a con! Right?

Yeah, that's about as good a marketing decision as completely trashing the Iron Man comic right about the same time the movie came out. Whee! Marvel R Smrt! *facepalm*
I think they don't want to offer female costumes because the sales would not be there. Most female superheroes are wearing the equivalent of one-piece bathing suits or lingerie. And as just about any woman can tell you, the most humiliating shopping experience is trying to find a bathing suit that looks good, gives support, and doesn't ride up the ass. Even women with what we'd consider to be perfect bodies have this anxiety.

Most days I LOVE that I work in a costume store, however the feeling is bittersweet when a customer enters the store looking for a "good" superhero costume, yet they either need it in a hurry thus depriving themselves the opportunity to find amazingly talented custom costumers online who sometimes offer the same price as the poorly made, mass produced store costumes. Or they look at a $90 Batman costume and say "$90 bucks that's ridiculous!"
However, for females, the sales ARE there, but customers are still disappointed that they are limited to Supergirl, Batgirl, and Wonder Woman. Since I received an excellent custom costume from an ebay seller, if a customer has the good sense to come in with time to spare for shipping, I gladly tell them about the amazing options that await them on ebay.

After actually looking at what Marvel provides, I am even more disappointed. As usual I can't help but notice that some of the men's costumes do not even come with pants or a pair of pathetic, but nonetheless costume enhancing, boot covers. I STILL, after one year of trying to sell Spiderman costumes, do not understand why he has muscle padding, Spiderman is not supposed to be that buff. As for female costumes, it was especially discouraging to see that they have every member of Fantastic Four except Sue Storm/ Invisible Girl considering they are supposed to be a team, but I guess she is not as valuable a member as the men she's giving herself a nosebleed for, or is that an aneurism she's having?

Lip gloss?! Lip gloss. Oh, yeah. Way to go, Marvel. I feel included in your marketing now. Watch me run right out and not buy that.
Also I note that those costumes are like, 38-90$ when even the ST corset (which was just a corset, the balaro was an extra 50$!!) was 200$.
Why is a full suit for a guy so much cheaper?
Because those costumes are made from cheap fabrics and fall apart after a few wearings. The ST corset should last for many years if it's made right, and it certain does look like it is.
In Marvel's defense, there are tons of superhero-themed or style costumes for women. Admittedly, many of them are of the "sexy" variety, but as one commenter pointed out above, many superhero costumes are little more than fancy bathing suits to begin with. It's a lot harder for a man to find a decent costume of any kind than it is for a woman.
Hmmm... I'm not sure they were *that* good of quality, and corsets can be pricey anyway. I'm still not convinced they're worth 200$ and it's not like they're offering a ton of support, from what I gathered from the owners description.
You're probably right about the men's Marvel costumes being quite cheap tho... Kinda thought they could've been better. But men dressed as super heroes usually aren't my thing.
You know, it feels like a little part of me dies when the producers of things I love just don't get it. Seriously. There are ways to make a bundle of cash with the licensing of these characters, but this is just insulting. | |
